After the researchers have gathered enough data, they can begin brainstorming solutions to the problem. This can be done in a variety of ways and is where engineering creativity really thrives. This is where possible solutions are evaluated and then analyzed. This could include simulation studies, creating decision matrixes, or even building prototypes for comparison.
This involves students choosing one of their top ideas and creating a plan for its creation. Students then construct the prototype using the materials specified and test it to make sure it meets their requirements for performance. Students may have to test their prototype, and possibly revise it to ensure that it is functioning as intended.
This is a great way to teach the importance of problem-solving and iteration. It is typical for engineers to find the solution, then test it and then find another issue that they have to solve. The process continues until the engineer has a solution which meets their expectations.
